The route
Where exactly we shoot around Big Ben
Everything below is within a ten-minute walk of Westminster station. A one-hour session covers four of these; half an hour covers two. We give you the order in advance, built around the light and around which spots will be empty at your hour.
The red phone boxes on Great George Street
Four boxes on the corner where Great George Street meets Parliament Square, with the tower rising behind them — the single most recognisable London frame there is. Our phone box guide covers eight more across the city. They are also the most contested spot on this list: from about 9am there is a queue, and people photograph each other for ten minutes at a time.
Best time: Sunrise to 8am, or after dark when the tower is lit.
Westminster Bridge itself
The green railings and lamp posts give you a clean line straight to the clock face, and the pavement is wide enough to shoot along the bridge rather than across it. Buses pass every couple of minutes, which is the easiest way to get a red bus into the frame on purpose.
Best time: Before 8.30am on a weekday.
The river wall on the South Bank
Cross to the far side and the whole of the Houses of Parliament opens up behind you, with room to sit on the wall and the steps. This is where most of the photographs people actually print get taken, because there is space to move and nobody walks through the shot.
Best time: Any time before 10am; also the last hour before sunset.
The stone arches under the bridge
Repeating Victorian arches, dry underfoot, with Big Ben framed in the opening. This is the rain plan, and it is also the quietest corner of Westminster — we have never had to wait for it.
Best time: Any time. Best in rain.
Victoria Embankment and the gardens
Plane trees, cast-iron lamps with dolphins, and the tower over your shoulder. Greener and calmer than the bridge, and a good place to finish a session walking rather than posing.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the light comes through the trees.
Parliament Square and the Jewel Tower side
The view most people miss: the tower from the west, with far fewer tourists and the abbey a minute away. Worth ten minutes at the end if you want something that does not look like everyone else’s photographs.
Best time: Early morning, before the coaches arrive.
Light and crowds
The best hour to photograph Big Ben
The first hour after sunrise, every time. The sun comes up behind the Houses of Parliament, so the tower reads as a clean silhouette against a bright sky, and the bridge is close to empty. London is far enough north that this means very different alarm clocks through the year: sunrise is around 8am in December, around 7am in March and October, and before 5am in June.
In summer most people take the last hour before sunset instead — the same low light, more people in it. An overcast day is not a problem: flat light is kind to faces and lets the Portland stone and the gold of the clock face keep their colour. The one thing we plan around is hard midday sun in July, which puts shadows in everyone’s eyes.
How busy Westminster is, hour by hour
Sunrise to 8am — runners and a handful of photographers. This is the window.
8 to 9am — the first tour groups reach the bridge.
10am to 6pm — a queue at the phone boxes and shoulder-to-shoulder on the bridge.
After sunset — it thins out again and the tower is lit, which is a completely different photograph.

Practical
Where we meet, and what it costs
We meet at the red phone boxes on Great George Street, at the corner of Parliament Square, three minutes from Westminster station. You get a map pin and a photo of the exact corner the day before, and your photographer messages you that morning on WhatsApp — so if a train is late or the sky opens, there is a direct line.
Westminster station is two minutes away on the Jubilee, District and Circle lines. If you are staying nearby we can start at your hotel door instead and walk down together.
Every session includes the planned route, full direction from the first minute, hand-edited photos in a private gallery within one week and behind-the-scenes clips the same evening. Easy cancellation, easy refund.
