Family photoshoot in London

Kids run, we follow. Nobody under ten has to hold a pose, and the grown-ups get a few frames of just the two of them at the end. Mornings, parks, or the bridge before the crowds.

£300 per hour · grandparents welcome · no posing for the little ones

The one photo where everyone is in it

On family trips one person is always behind the phone. A family session is an hour where nobody is: the kids do what kids do, we keep up, and you get the photo with all of you in it, in London, at an age they won’t be next year.

No posing for kids

We don’t ask a four-year-old to smile at the camera. We give them something to do and shoot what happens.

Mornings work best

Small children are at their best early, and so are the parks and bridges. We plan around nap time, not the other way round.

A few of just the two of you

At the end, ten minutes for the parents alone. Most couples haven’t had a photo together since the kids arrived.

Where families shoot best

Richmond Park and Kew for autumn light and space to run. St James’s Park for the pelicans and Big Ben behind. Westminster Bridge before nine, when it’s empty. Or the street outside your hotel, if it photographs well.

Maternity photoshoots in London

A maternity session runs exactly like a family one: one hour, one area, a short walk and a photographer who keeps up rather than sets up. Most people book it between 28 and 34 weeks, and it is the same price as any other session, from £150.

When to book it

Between 28 and 34 weeks is the window most people choose. The bump reads clearly in a photograph by then, and walking for an hour is still comfortable. Later than 36 weeks is fine too, but we shorten the route to one block and keep a bench in sight at every stop.

If you are visiting London on a babymoon, tell us the dates when you enquire and we will build the route around your hotel rather than around a landmark.

Where it works best

St James’s Park and the Mall, for green, quiet paths and somewhere to sit every fifty metres. The Victoria Embankment, if you want the river and the London Eye in the frame without the crowd on the bridge. Kensington Gardens and the Serpentine, if you are staying west.

All three have toilets, cafés and a taxi rank within a few minutes, which matters more on a maternity session than the backdrop does.

What is included

The same as every session: one hour, one area, 50+ edited photos, the full gallery within a week. Your partner and any older children can be in part of it and then bow out, which is usually how it goes. Prices are on the pricing page, and the couple version of this session is on our couple photoshoot page.

More about family photoshoots in London

Where families actually work in London

With children, the best location is rarely the most famous one. What matters is space to move, somewhere to sit down, and a toilet and a coffee within five minutes. The parks do all of that: Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, Greenwich Park with the view over the river, Hampstead Heath if you want meadows and old trees rather than landmarks. If you want London to be unmistakable in the photographs, the South Bank works well because it is wide, and children can run along it without ending up in a road.

We can also start at your hotel or the flat you have rented. Small children are usually at their best in the first twenty minutes, and not having to travel first buys you those twenty minutes.

How we shoot with children

We do not ask anyone under about eight to pose, because it does not work and it makes everybody tense. Instead we give the family something to do — walk this way, chase each other to that tree, lift her up, tell him the worst joke you know — and photograph what happens. The photograph where everybody is looking at the camera and smiling does get taken, usually near the beginning while attention lasts, and then we stop asking for it.

Teenagers are a different job and we treat them like adults: fewer instructions, more walking, and a few portraits of them alone that they will actually want to post.

Timing it around naps and moods

Late afternoon suits most families, because the light is good and the morning rush is over. With babies and toddlers, mid-morning after the first nap is often better than golden hour, and we would rather shoot in flat midday light with a happy child than at sunset with an exhausted one. Tell us the ages and we will suggest the hour.

An hour is the right length for most families; half an hour is enough with a baby. Bring a snack, a change of clothes for the youngest, and no expectations about everyone behaving — that part is our problem, not yours.

Grandparents, big groups and multi-generation trips

If you are in London with grandparents or as two families together, say so when you book. Larger groups need a slightly different route — fewer stairs, shorter distances, more places to sit — and a bit more time, so two hours is usually the honest answer rather than one.

Family session questions

All of them. Babies in a carrier, toddlers on the run, teenagers who’d rather not. We’ve photographed each and know what to do with them.

Then we wait, or shoot the parents for a bit, or chase pigeons. An hour is long enough for a bad five minutes.

Yes, and please do. Groups of six and more are priced on request, the session itself works the same way.

Plain colours, layers, nothing that itches. Everyone at a similar level of dress, and children in something they can run in. The longer version, adults and children, is in our guide to what to wear for a London photoshoot.

Morning, almost always. We plan around nap time and breakfast, not around the light.
