A birthday call from the red phone box by Big Ben

A birthday, a warm June evening, and the hour before sunset. We started on the South Bank with Big Ben lit gold across the river, crossed to the Embankment wall facing the London Eye, then the arch under the bridge for a few quieter frames, and finished on Westminster Bridge as the light went orange. Stop by stop

We started at the red phone box near Parliament Square, where a call on the old receiver is the obvious birthday joke. Then down to the Victoria Embankment, where the evening sun comes in low along the river and the London Eye sits across the water behind you. That is where the warmest photos of the evening were made.

Next, the arch under the bridge: at golden hour the light pours in at one end and throws long shadows across the stone, with Big Ben framed at the other. We finished on the bridge and on the river steps as the light turned orange, with the Houses of Parliament lit up behind.

Golden hour in London: what to know

In June the sun sets after nine, so a golden-hour session starts around eight in the evening; in spring and autumn it is earlier. The light lasts roughly an hour and changes fast, which is why we plan the route so the best spot comes last.

Golden hour is also the most requested slot of the summer, so it books up first. If you want this light on a particular date, send it early.
