The Embankment, the London Eye and the red phone box
A cold, damp January morning at Westminster. We started on the river wall on the Victoria Embankment, with the London Eye across the Thames and almost nobody around, then crossed to the red phone box by Big Ben and finished with close portraits against the dark stone of the bridge when the wind picked up. This is the route we describe in full on our Big Ben photoshoot page.
Winter is underrated for a London session: low, soft light all day, empty famous spots until ten, and the river wall to yourselves. Cold weather just means a shorter walk between backdrops, and we plan for that.
How the hour went
We met on the Victoria Embankment, where the river wall looks across at the London Eye and there was almost nobody around. The first frames were the easy ones: walking, standing close, a clear umbrella between showers. Then we crossed Westminster Bridge, stopping at the railings with Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament behind, and finished at the red phone box near Parliament Square.
The last portraits were close ones, faces and hands, against the dark stone of the bridge. When it is windy, close-ups are the right answer: hair and coats move, and the background stays calm.
Winter in London, for photos
From November to February the sun never climbs high, so the light is soft for most of the day rather than only at golden hour. Sunrise is late enough that a morning session does not mean an alarm at five, and the famous spots stay quiet far longer than in summer.
Cold is the real challenge, and it is easy to plan around. Keep the walk between backdrops short, wear a coat you like being photographed in (it will be in most of the photos), and bring gloves you can take off quickly.
Planning a winter session
Ask for a morning slot. We plan a route with short walks and a covered spot in case of rain. Read the best time of day for photos in London for month-by-month light, and couple photoshoots in London for how booking works.
