Solo in London: the phone box, the Embankment and Big Ben

A solo session for someone travelling on her own and tired of asking strangers. We met at the red phone box near Parliament Square, walked the Victoria Embankment with the London Eye across the river, and finished back on the bridge with Big Ben in the frame as the afternoon light softened. This is the route we describe in full on our Big Ben photoshoot page.

Solo sessions run exactly like couple sessions: full direction the whole way through, where to stand, where to look, when to walk. One hour, three or four backdrops within a walk, nobody left to “act natural”.

Where we went

We started at the red phone box near Parliament Square, where Big Ben stands at the end of the street. For a solo session it is the easiest place to begin: there is something to lean on, a door to hold and a receiver to pick up, so nobody has to stand in the middle of a pavement wondering what to do.

From there we walked down to the Victoria Embankment. The river wall there, with the London Eye across the Thames, is wide and open, which suits full-length portraits and outfits that move. We finished on the bridge, leaning on the green railings with the Houses of Parliament behind, and in the stone arch under the bridge for a few quieter frames.

Solo sessions: the worries, and what actually happens

The usual worry is being photographed in public, alone, with strangers walking past. In practice people barely look: Westminster is full of cameras, and a photographer at work is part of the scenery. We keep you moving between short setups, so you never hold a pose for long.

The other worry is not knowing how to pose. You do not need to. We give simple directions (walk towards me, look at the river, turn your shoulder) and the natural moments come in between. That is where most of the favourite photos are.

Planning your own

Summer afternoons are bright and busy; the hour before sunset is softer and calmer, and early morning is the quietest of all. Bring one outfit, or two if you like, since there is time for a quick change. Read more about solo photoshoots in London, or see the best time of day for photos in London.
