Under the Westminster Bridge arch, Big Ben at the far end

Another wet-weather session, this time built around the arch under Westminster Bridge: dry, empty, and with Big Ben framed at the end of it. From there the phone box, the river wall, and a few frames on the bridge itself between showers. This is the route we describe in full on our Big Ben photoshoot page.

One hour, one area, three backdrops within a walk. Delivered within one week with behind-the-scenes clips the same evening.

The arch, and everything around it

The stone passage under Westminster Bridge, on the South Bank side, is one of the most useful places in London on a wet day. It is covered, it is usually empty, and Big Ben sits in the frame at the far end of the arch. We used it twice in this session: once for a slow walk hand in hand, once for a dance while a shower passed.

Between showers we went up to the red phone box near Parliament Square, with red buses behind and an umbrella in the doorway, and out onto Westminster Bridge, where the wet road reflects the Houses of Parliament. The river wall on the Victoria Embankment, with the London Eye across the Thames, gave us the wide, open frames.

Why umbrella weather is worth keeping

A clear umbrella is a prop and a frame at the same time. It gives your hands something to do, keeps you close together, and lets the skyline show through. Wet pavements reflect colour, the famous spots empty out, and the light stays soft from start to finish.

What does not work is standing still in the rain for long. We keep each setup short and move on, so nobody gets cold.

Your session

If rain is forecast for your date, keep the booking: we build the route around the arches and the phone box, and only move the day for a storm. More ideas in our rainy-day guide and our list of London photo spots; for prices and how a session runs, see couple photoshoots in London.
